My Favorite PickleBall Paddle

As I look at the reviews of the ONIX Graphite Z5 Graphite Carbon Fiber Pickleball Paddle on various websites I can’t help but notice that most of them seem to be written by a robot and most everything seems to be copied and/or pasted from other sites.  This is the paddle that my mom uses and it seems that there’s always several pickleball players also using this one.

There is a lot to like about the ONIX Graphite Z5 Graphite Carbon Fiber Pickleball Paddle beginning with the oversized head which makes it great for beginners.  A bigger sweet spot makes it easier to reach the harder shots and means it’s more forgiving for newer players The paddle is about 15 ½ inches tall 8 inches wide.  The handle, which is cushioned and 4 ¼ inches around, also reminds me of a tennis racquet handle which made it easier for me to transition from tennis to pickleball.  (Don’t even ask about my attempt at Snowboarding after Skiing for so long!). Also included is an edge guard, which many of the cheap racquets don’t have. This is great for players like me who tend to scrape or hit the ground a lot.  You can get this racquet in various weights and colors.

The construction of this cool paddle:  The core of this pickleball paddle is made from Nomex, which is made from calendered paper and is formed into a honeycomb shape, was originally invented in the 1960’s by Dupont.  Nomex is a flame-resistant meta-aramid used by firefighters, race car drivers, pilots and pickleball players! It creates a lightweight but very strong core for the ONIX Graphite Z5.  The face of this paddle is a graphite carbon fibre with a rough textured surface. This means long-lasting and great for adding spin to your pickleball shots.

My mom especially hates the aggressive design graphics so she’s sometimes embarrassed or hesitant to play with the ONIX Graphite Z5, but she’s getting used to overlook that since she keeps on winning (she’s 84).  Some other things we don’t like is the loudness and the less control the paddle has – which is made up for by all the power!

Started by Steve Wong in 2011 ( he actually left an information-technology manager job in Washington state at 34 years old ) onixpickleball.com was originally S Type Sports:  stypesports.com (website no longer active).  He is a driving force behind the rising popularity of pickleball and designed the ONIX Graphite Z5 Graphite Carbon Fiber Pickleball Paddle.  This paddle is available in blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red, white and yellow.

Although the face and advertising on some websites say its made in the USA it may actually be made in Mexico.  Not sure but it doesn’t really matter to me as long as this paddle helps me keep winning. The graphics also say onixsports.com but that redirects you to onixpickleball.com which seems to be the company’s new website.  Customer service is at [email protected].

This paddle is also USAPA Approved.

The Third Shot Drop

The third shot drop in pickleball is effective strategy to return the ball when you are the serve receiver and you are not in position to effectively hit the serve as the serve is bounced low out of serve box. This go to shot on the travel shot is to drop the ball in a picked up stack, aimed to bounce on the end line and follow the bounce back into the serve box with a flick of the wrist and wrist rotation to give the ball some forward power. The bounce out of the court is when this shot works best on travel and it is a shot so effective with great success that it often times cause the server to think twice or three times about the pace and placement of the serve. Even players like Allyson Munro has picked up on the shot and used the travel drop shot effectively and is one of this writer’s favorite opponent to watch when she has the drop shot on travel as she can do this shot in one motion from pick up to finish while still playing under the ball. With end line out of serve box, it is the best shot to use to go down and win the point (for instance with the other team short on the serve count and winning point) and key shot to set up the point as it is a point of attack and potential to finish the point quickly and early. If the other team doesn’t don’t follow the serve and pick up the ball, they have left the game open to your team vastly and given you the advantage of either a smash over the opponent’s head, a safe and controlled shot back into the serve box and held serve or the lower radius shot with the same goal as in a smashed shot set up from the travel drop shot. With this shot, you can hold serve more easily than a normal drop shot and in some cases, it is easy enough to even hold serve until the other team struggles to kick serve. There is also a second, more high risk of high reward shot with the travel drop shot. Here, the player waits until the contact of the serve and then hitting the ball on the serve up side, the ball is dropped and “hit” into the ball on it’s down side from the dropped ball in the pickleball end line. The final outcome of the second option is that if the first option, it is much harder to make a controlled shot and the risk is greater in failure to garner a point or make the serve be played over again if the serve was on the border of the serve box on the bounce of the dropped ball.

How to play Pickleball and not embarrass yourself

I always wanted to play Pickleball which is the worlds fastest growing sport. Would I be embarrassed? Would I be good enough? Am I too old to learn? My friend Billy Ray said it’s easy to play, but he always gets beaten by 20-something’s. I didn’t need to know how to play; I had an idea. I would go to the lake and practice before school began again.

Then a guy in my neighborhood was struggling to learn he said, but he, being short and without hand eye coordination, felt it was hopeless. He had been shown many times, but couldn’t do it. He was to play that Saturday with his wife. I told him how foolish he was thinking he couldn’t do it. The guy said he would like for me to teach him, and, to my surprise, his wife would like to. I said I would.

Mary, his wife, was about half his size. She seemed pretty strong, though in reality she wasn’t. The chair she sat on wasn’t buckled down. I explained how the name came about, but Mary wouldn’t sit on a chair; she just sat on the grass. I didn’t think she would be any good, but I was wrong. She took to it. Mary and Ray played several games a week, but she could have been better if she had learned the rules. I explained the rules.

What do I wear? I wore just my athletic shoes, shorts and t-shirt. I made Mary, wear cover-ups, and she wore a bathing suit. A bathing suit? I told her she would need more than that to play. I made Billy Ray wear a shirt; he begged not to. I wanted to wear a cycling shirt but didn’t. Mary also asked to wear a bike shirt. I said I thought it was “Cheap”. This was to be an expensive deal for them, I asked them if they had balls. They said yes. I shook my head in disgust but obliged.

I told Billy to grab a ball and I handed one to Mary. “Okay people, we are going to play basket ball and then we are going to play ping-pong. She thought that was a good idea. To her I said, “To Win you have to score more points than your opponent.” I beat them both, but it wasn’t close. Never underestimate the power of the cheap shot. Give them nothing. Then I said, “On to pickle-ball, now!”

Mary, had an idea for a French name. She called it “Pickle-ball”, I said “It isn’t French.” She retreated and we would now call the game “Pickleball”. I told them the rules were simple. “It is a cross between tennis and badminton played on a court with a net. I would teach them how to serve, and she scored her first point.

She kept the serve and scored again. I stopped the game. “No Sorry! you are not allowed to keep the serve.” She didn’t understand, so I had her put the ball on the table and hit the ball over the net without serving. Then she got it. I told her he would be the server. I put the test on her husband, he was terrible.

Because of the confusion we had to read the rules again. “When your opponent serves you will place the ball in the center of the table.” “After the first serve the next player will have two ways to win.” “The first; If the serve doesn’t make it over the net it is called a service fault and your opponent scores a point.” The second way is to send the ball over the net any way you want to.”

“Score a point for sending the ball over the net. That covers how to win.” “Except this is going to be a combination of ping-pong and badminton: One person serves, then the other two serve in a rotation.” “On the first serve you have one try, if you miss it, the other person serves” “You must be able to hit the ball over the net with two strikes.”

“For the first two servers, no badminton; you can hit the net or spike the ball as long as it goes over the net.” “Then the last person continues to serve until someone makes an error.” “If you have a ball in your hand at the time of the error you score a point.” So I demonstrated the play. I put it on Mary.

I told Billy to line up his paddle and I tossed the ball up softly, he missed it. I would make it easy for them. “You see Billy, there are ways of scoring points.” “You can spike the ball over the net.” “Or you can hit the ball and it still stays up; like when I spiked it into the air then you came to the net and kept the ball going up.” “When you hit the ball like that and you go to the net to keep it going up you score a point.”

“So here’s how we are going to play this game. What we do is put the ball in the center of the table, and whoever serves serves first.” “We are going to play it in teams.” “My job is to help them with strategy.” “There is only one strategy in this game, To win the point you have to hit the ball over the net.”

“We will mark out the court, there is a line in the back of the court is the back line, the front line is the service line.” ‘When you are on the back line I will tell you to serve.” “Lisa, your job is simple.” “When I say serve you are to serve

Stay Out of the Kitchen !

Among the first things that you learn in Pickleball would be to remain out of this kitchen. What is the kitchen? It’s a word for the zone at Pickleball or a place seven feet in the internet. As a consequence, that you can’t hit the ball from the air if you’re standing between the internet and the kitchen . While I will examine the principles in detail to the zone I am going to discuss why and where you need to stand.

This means players must stand inside one inch of their zone in Pickleball. Just how many gamers actually do that? I spent a while viewing the toes of different players while I waited for a game. This close didn’t endure even because the group was returning function if one player could begin at the kitchen lineup. Participants were generally 3-12″ in the point in this scenario.
What is the Benefit of toeing the line? Assessing the internet means controlling the purpose as it provides you with a opportunity to win the rally. Whenever you’re near the kitchen line you’ve got both angle to strike also a better opportunity and your competitors feet to return shots. You may see players endure an inch out of the zone in Pickleball and lean into get in touch with the ball . This allows them to speak to the ball at a stage that is higher and it offers the opponent less time to respond to this ball.

So, why not players toe online? Some are fearful of the ball being struck at them since they’re near the net. When they view their competitor will hit a overhead Other folks go back. Some are worried about covering the lob of their opponent. The instance is where I see folks getting into trouble because they prefer to stand a foot to have the ability to pay for the lob.
So what exactly can you do if you’re fearful of becoming lobbed? Do not straight up from the kitchen ! Consider your competition. Perhaps you have hit on a lob for you? Can they strike on that shot? Make sure you toe the line if your opponent hits lobs and/or is not consistent.
Even if your opponent hits a consistently very good lob, in the event you cheat back in the kitchen ? You have to evaluate your strengths. If this is the case, why are you going back? You ought to be able to reach. I am not tall but that I will move. I chase it down and usually hit a fall store.
Access to the Kitchen lineup Instantly
If my group is working out, I love to hustle up to the kitchen immediately after we struck our third chance. This is something I have talked about in quite a few articles before on improve and the way to win your game. By hitting a photo fall, I’ve got a better prospect of getting all the way since the rate of the ball is if I struck a push. That I might not make it although I mix in a chance that is tough to maintain my competitors. Should this happen, I quit before hitting the ball and I then proceed all of the way up into the lineup.
Once I hit on a drop shot that bounces too large or a driveway too large over the internet, I could get trapped deep in the courtroom if the other group makes an offensive play. If it occurs, go on and stay in the courtroom close to the baseline. If necessary, hit on a shot fall or shot fall.

The purpose is not to get trapped in no man’s property. This is a theory out of World War I where soldiers had been in risk in the region between the trenches. In tennis, the property of no man is the place one lawn behind the service line to a single lawn facing the baseline. While I do not believe we’ve got a definition for no person’s property in Pickleball, it is basically the region where you’re just too deep to strike a volley but near the web stroke. This means that the opponent can hit at your feet so you’re very likely to eliminate the stage.
Exactly the exact same thing holds true once you’re returning function. You wish to reach the kitchen . The very best approach is to return the ball deep. In this manner you have time. It may take some time, if your opponent hits you a serve. I compensate by hitting a ball back which is usual. I have time to move all the way .

The official championship rule publication for Pickleball has nine distinct principles linked to the non volley zone. I am just going to pay for the areas of the rule, As you can read about them .
This means if I struck on a out the non volley zone but shed my paddle it’s a fault. If I’m wearing sunglasses and struck on a out the kitchen but the fall to the non volley zone, it’s also an error.

The follow-through, along with the momentum out of the
Activity.
B.2. If the zone rolls through
That the volley movement, prior to or after calling the
Ball, it’s a fault.

I had been playing a couple weeks back with a participant quite new to the game and he struck a volley out the kitchen but fell into the volley zone. This is regarded as a fault in Pickleball when the ball is deemed dead until the individual entered the non volley zone.
C. It’s a mistake if the participant is caused by the participant’s momentum
To get anything That’s touching the non-volley zone,
Such as the participant’s spouse.
It’s a fault when the ball has been declared dead

As I mentioned previously, you are able to go into the kitchen if you’re not hitting a volley. If you go to the zone in Pickleball to strike a ball which bounced, you have to set position outside kitchen until you reach a volley.
D. If the zone for any has touched on

Overview
Now, you could be asking yourself why Pickleball even offers a non volley zone. As demonstrated by a history of this game, among those co-founders was over six feet. To stop him from beating the ball in his enemies, the kitchen was made. The excellent thing about this rule is it is an equalizer so gamers that are taller do not have an edge.

Can you play pickleball on a tennis court ?

Why yes you can you play pickleball on a tennis court indeed.

This is a great question since Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world.

There are about 20,000 pickleball courts in the USA but about 2 million pickleball players.

To put this in perspective there are about 250,000 tennis courts in the USA with about 18 million tennis players.

You can easily convert an existing tennis court into 1 – 4 pickleball courts depending on your needs, time, budget and restrictions.  Since a tennis court is is 120 feet by 60 feet in size ( the playing surface is actually 36 x 78 feet for doubles and 27 x 78 feet for singles) you can create several pickleball courts on a single tennis court.  You may not want to add 4 pickleball courts since it would be a bit crowded. Some of these configuration will require you to think and play outside the lines. Also the tennis net is 36 inches tall while the pickleball net is 34 inches so you’ll need a way to reduce or tie down the net. The pickleball net is actually 36 inches at the edges and 34 inches in the center so tying down the center will work.  If you can’t that’s okay, pickleball will still be fun!!

From the center tennis court line measure out 10 feet to the sides and mark for the outer pickleball court lines.  Then measure and mark 7 feet away from the net for the non-volley zone and then mark 15 feet further for the pickleball baseline.  So the baseline is 22 feet away from the net. Connect the outer edges of the baseline and connect the non-volley zone from the edges to the middle. Do the same for the other side of the court.  Congratulations You now have a regulation size pickleball court with a right service area, a left service area, a non-volley zone and a baseline. You’ll end up with a court 44 feet long by 20 feet wide.

Use tape to lay down the lines. You will need at least 200 feet of tape (more if you don’t measure things very will, like me). You can use pickleball court tape or a pickleball line set.

You should end up with a pickleball court that looks something like this:

can you play pickleball on a tennis court

These are the simple instructions for temporarily converting a tennis court into one pickleball court.  You may need some pickleball paddles, pickleball balls and a pickleball net.

So yes you can you play pickleball on a tennis court !!!
